The Pandemic Has Changed Children’s Learning Culture

          As we navigate a constantly changing world together, especially with the extensive cultural changes brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, it is more important than ever to provide young children with as much support as possible, especially with Social-Emotional Learning.

What are some of the changes in children’s learning caused by the pandemic?

  • Children are falling behind in their reading skills across the board, especially in areas of reading comprehension. Reading comprehension is a critical part of healthy childhood development.
  • Trauma can negatively affect children’s ability to focus, process information, and form healthy relationships. The pandemic is a collective cultural trauma that many children are experiencing during their formative years. As of August of 2021, more than 43,000 children had one parent who had died due to COVID-19. Of those 43,000 children, Black children were impacted at disproportionately high levels.
  • Many children are now receiving inadequate health care due to an overwhelmed health care system, pandemic precautions, and financial difficulties that are being felt across the nation. When children are struggling with basic health issues they are less prepared to reach their full learning potential. 

Per UNICEF, these are 5 excellent ways that caregivers can support their children’s academic and social-emotional learning during the pandemic:

  • Work on establishing routines with children that involve educational activities, entertainment options, play time, and also allow flexibility for daily events, emotions, or other changing factors. Have your healthy routines built around the concept of adaptability and growth rather than rigidness. 
  • Show children what healthy and supportive conversations look like. Have open family discussions on what might be bothering children or causing them anxiety. Encourage children to express their feelings and ask questions. Acknowledge and talk with them about what comes up in a supportive and growth-centered manner. 
  • Start small and build up: This goes for routines, conversations, designated school time, etc. Begin with shorter time frames, fewer segments and easier subject matter then gradually increase these items to the desired levels over time. 
  • Make sure children have a supportive and healthy online experience. Teach children about what not to share online (like personal information), enable parental controls on devices, and limit daily and weekly amounts of screen time. Establish clear rules regarding technology and let your children know why each rule is important. 
  • Stay connected with children’s teachers, tutors, school administration, and others that help to educate your child. Touching base on their progress, strengths, and areas for improvement creates an informed and supportive team for your child.
